Helping children understand the events of 9-11 and honoring those who perished is happening in nearly every classroom, across the country today. To help elementary students understand what happened on this day the For Action Initiative has developed lessons for students in grades Kindergarten through twelve.

Here’s a lesson for students in grades third through fifth:

A Fireboat and Its Heroic Adventures: The Heroic Adventures of John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman. Synopsis:
Students read the book Fireboat then discuss the boat’s history and the heroism of its crews and actions. Students also explore the concept of a hero while developing an understanding that everyone has the potential to be a hero. Click on the link for more information on how to use this picture book to teach the events of 9/11/01.

All the Best
